It’s ok to take a break

At the end of 2018 I launched an oversized clutch collection. It started with a bang and ended with a fizzle a short while later. I just had too many things on my plate at the time that after my launch, I was unable to follow up with new styles. At least not until the end of 2019. A colleague and I decided to host a popup event. At the time it was a good idea… or so I thought.

How I Cope During Covid-19

There are times in my life I ask myself ‘what do you want to remember from this moment?’ The answer tends to lie in the things that bring joy to myself and those around me. Yet what about those moments where it seems as if there is no joy to be found? How do we make it through?

2020 has certainly been a whole year already and we are not even close to the finish line. At the start of this year, many of us had 365 days worth of plans that we wanted to accomplish. Then Covid-19 happened and we were forced to cancel or postpone those plans. So, what are we supposed to do when the future is uncertain and we don’t have an end in sight for this pandemic? How are we supposed to keep our spirits up? We have to dig deeper and create joyful moments for ourselves!

Micro Wedding... What is that?

Recently I had the pleasure of working with some very talented people for a styled non-traditional micro-wedding themed shoot. Before 2018, I had never heard of a micro-wedding; but now it's 2020 and I am seeing them everywhere. As we know, we are in the middle of a pandemic that has literally put a lot of events on pause. But for the people who wish to continue with their plans to get married regardless of Covid-19, a micro wedding is probably the way to go. With this in mind, I decided to do a bit of research and here is what I discovered:

A micro-wedding, not to be confused with an elopement is a more intimate event with 20 or less guests. It is very similar to a traditional wedding in that it contains all the same elements e.g. venue, decor, cake, photographer etc. A micro-wedding takes planning and can be as beautiful and special as a traditional wedding just with a smaller guest list.

Just a little Fun pt.2

Sometimes your greatest critic is yourself. At least in my case.  I mentioned in part 1 of this post that I can be a bit of an over thinker.  Part of that is second guessing myself and disregarding my own ideas. As part of the Miss Bahamas and B.T.V.I. collaboration, designers were asked to design and create 2 looks for the contestants.  The first look was a straight dress for the motorcade (discussed in the last post)  and the second was an avant-garde piece. I was both excited and apprehensive about creating the second look. However, before I could even find out any details, I started to second guess myself.  I had never created an avant-garde look before!  Do I even have what it takes?

Just a little fun pt. 1

Sometimes I surprise myself. Last year, I was invited to be a part of a collaboration between the Miss Bahamas Organization and The Bahamas Technical & Vocational Institute (B.T.V.I). When I got invited to be a part of this event, I decided even before hearing anything about it that I was just going to have fun. I tend to sometimes take myself a bit too seriously (no surprise for the people who know me). I have a tendency to check rules/regulations or overthink a situation until I stress myself out. This time, I decided to just have fun and to ask no questions.

Challenge accepted!

Last year I was challenged to design a birthday outfit for a client. Although I do create one of a kind outfits regularly, this one was a challenge. Lia wanted to be a mermaid for her birthday. I must admit I was both very excited and terrified at the prospect. I have a slight and maybe even unhealthy fascination with the mythical creature; but that’s another topic altogether. After overcoming the initial feelings of anxiety, I presented Lia with a few sketches and once she chose the one she liked I started the process. Mind you, those fears once again arose during the construction process. I had to make the tail in a way that she would be able to walk without removing it. I sometimes felt out of my element but I pressed on and created what I had designed.

Whatever happened to JUJU Season?

From the moment I started fashion school, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to create (I learned this term years later) a vertically integrated clothing boutique. The idea was to have a clothing store where every garment is designed, created, retailed and made in the Bahamas. After graduating, I had no idea how to accomplish this goal so I decided to go back to school. I studied fashion marketing and merchandising in Canada (this is where I learned the fancy term that I mentioned earlier). I learned about so many different aspects of the fashion industry and that my dream was already a reality and something that I could actually accomplish!

Let me introduce myself

My name is Myrlande Julien and I am a shy, sarcastic, socially awkward ambivert who loves to create bold and beautiful designs. My love for fashion started a very long time ago as a young girl in primary school. What started out as an obsession with making doll clothes- that lasted way too long as far as my family was concerned- turned into what I am today: a fashion designer.

For many years, I struggled with owning who I am and my place in the fashion industry; so much so that I had contemplated leaving it for a good.
